FL Studio:  The #1 Ranked DAW

Review

A recent 2012 article at the Synthopia website on the top 10 DAWs in the world ranked FL Studio as #1 among the best DAWs according to 10,252 user votes.

Many users share stories with fond memories of starting out making music with the entry level Fruity Loops version of FL Studio, only to move up to the upgraded versions with more features.  FL Studio has a unique interface and many users find it easier to use compared to other best DAW’s.

The FL Studio program is available in three levels, offering feature bundles of increasing complexity.  The program options are summarized as follows:

  • Fruity Loops – Entry level version with music composing and arranging features.
  • Producer – Full music production features including recording and post production ability.
  • Signature – A bundle with a limited collection of signature plugins as well as the producer version features.

Description

After more than 12 years of continuous concentrated development, FL Studio 10 is now a turn-key software music production system and could very well become the fastest way for routing music from your brain to your sound system.

FL Studio 10 contains everything you need for composing, arranging, recording, editing, mixing, and mastering your own professional quality music.  The addition of audio plugins like Slicex, Edison, and Vocodex will help you loop, chop, and manage your audio in creative ways.

The producer version includes Synthmaker, which is a modular effects and synth creation environment with boundless potential.  The producer version also includes all features in the Fruity Edition plus the ability to record audio from external sources direct to disk with offline rendering and mixing abilities.  Editing and post production of clips and envelopes for internal and external audio is the frosting on the cake.

Features

FL Studio version 10 is currently sold at nice discounts, and the good news is that users who buy version 10 and higher are offered free upgrades to new version releases for a lifetime.

Notable functions in FL Studio 10:

  • Audio manipulation and editing,
  • pitch shifting,
  • pitch correction,
  • beat-detection,
  • time-stretching,
  • slicing,
  • harmonization,
  • cut and paste audio manipulation,
  • audio warping,
  • capability to automate many interface and all plug-in parameters by drawing or recording spline-based curves, or use of formula based links,
  • and capability to e-hosted in other DAWs through ReWire or as as a VST.

FL Studio version 11 offers many improvements over version 10, but some users are waiting until it has been released for a little while incase bug fixes are required.

Advantages

  • Easy to learn.  Perhaps fastest to learn for self-taught individuals at all levels.  Many prefer it to Cubase, Sonar, Ableton, and even Project 5.
  • Excellent buy cost wise.  Many of the same features as Ableton Live at about ½ the price.
  • Drag and drop interface features.
  • Has everything most DAW users are looking for.

Disadvantages

  • Some users don’t like the piano roll and prefer MIDI editors.
  • Somewhat limited on professional quality sounds, but new VSTs are easy to add and at low cost.
  • Not as flexible as Ableton Live, but easier to use.

Competing Products
