Although I am a beginning photographer, I am not a dumb one. I don't know everything there is to know about photography, but I do a lot of research, and I am confident that I make the best choices possible for my financial means and artistic wants and needs. As a young adult, I still like to do fun things with my photos. However, Instagram-type filters bore me, and the only toy lens I own is a DIY pinhole lens. I prefer more challenging photographic experiments, and I've always wanted to try fisheye photography, so I began researching. Most places that talk about fisheye lenses tell you "oh, fisheye lens converters are completely terrible. It can cost a few hundred dollars, but save up for a real fisheye lens!" I knew that, after having already purchased two cameras, a couple lenses, and various other equipment in the past year, I wouldn't be able to afford that, and I also knew that I wasn't going to be taking pictures for professional magazines or anything of the sort. I just wanted a way to take a few fun fisheye shots, so a converter it was.One could technically call this just a really exaggerated wide angle lens. It's marked .18X, which, compared to, say, a .43X, makes a much more "curved" image. It makes an effect that literally takes in 180 degrees of your camera's surroundings and turns them into a circular image. Just putting the converter on any lens won't automatically give you that classic circular, dreamy image, though. I think that the trick (and the problem that others were encountering) is that you need to use a lens that already has a relativey wide angle. I tried this lens on both my 50mm Canon lens and the 18-55mm kit lens that came with the Canon T3i, and the choice was clear, the second lens worked much better to attain the fisheye effect I was looking for. At the focal length of 55mm, the fisheye effect is barely there. Maybe a slight curving at the edges, but nothing much changes. The real effect comes out at 18mm. There is a defined circle in the middle of the image, and the edges are black. The circle in the middle is a perfect fisheye that is clear in the middle and a bit blurred at the edges, but not painfully blurry or low quality like others have complained about. The Canon T3i is a cropped sensor camera, so I'm not sure how it would work on a full-frame sensor, but I'm sure that many who own a full-frame camera would be able to justify buying an actual lens made for that camera anyways. I'm also not sure how it would hold up to other camera and lens combinations, but I would assume that a similar setup in another brand would work fairly well.I am also excited to use this lens with my 35mm Pentax K1000! The only compatible lens I own for it at the moment is a 28mm lens, and the fisheye converter is too large to screw into its threads, but I can hold it up close to the lens of it after focusing it and get a pretty good fisheye effect nonetheless! As I said before, I'm not a professional by any means, and I am only really using this lens for fun, but I can honestly say that it meets my needs and produces clear, fun images that are worthy of putting in my portfolio. Maybe someday if my hobby goes further or if I have the budget, I'll buy an actual fisheye lens to add to my collection and take absolutely perfect pictures that are good enough to sell, but for someone like me, I think that this converter is the perfect place to start.
