Perfect for Sony Z7U &Z5U, Panny HVX-200
I have been a professional broadcast videographer for 10 years working with Porta-Brace cases and bags and rain gear, so I'm familiar with the quality. I wanted a PB case for my new Sony HVR-Z5U Camcorder, but I really didn't like the old Porta-Brace "blue" color. The new black models are so much more professional looking, and the red trim is a really classy touch.
Style aside, this case is a tank. The rigid sidewalls and hard inseert make this a much more rugged bag than it would look like on the outside with the black nylon fabric. I've seen the construction of the interior supports Porta-Brace uses, and I can describe it: they use a very thick, rigid corrugated plastic bonded to tough, spongy white nylon foam on either side, making it light, soft and shock-absorbing but very strong.
Having that inside this bag really was enough by itself since I want top protection for my new camera. But this particular model has a bunch of handy extras along with it, including one of their great leather shoulder pad straps. After a decade of lugging around a broadcast ENG camera, I can tell you these straps are the best out there. Very comfortable.
It also included some nice, fuzzy padded bags for small stuff and for additional padding inside the case, and a couple of rigid U-shaped pieces that form a "camera caddy" that perfectly support the camera with the thick, red pad on the inside bottom of the case. With that pad, the caddy keeping it from sliding around, and a strap to keep it from bouncing against the side walls, any pro camera in the size range of the Z7U, Z5U, Panny HVX-200, or the Canon XH-A1 will be comfortable and safe and riding in style.
It also comes with a great little LED light with a flexible gooseneck, which is great when you're doing event filming up in a booth and all the lights are off for a performance to find a button or switch in the dark. There's even a white balance card inside in case you don't have a receipt for something in your pocket for a quick w/b in the field.
The real clincher for this is that it's designed to fit inside an airline overhead compartment or underneath your seat, so you don't have to check your expensive camera when you travel with it. I would make sure they check it with me watching to prevent any shenanigans, however.
Bottom line, this camera case is well worth the money by itself much less with the extras. If you're spending that much on a camera, there's no reason not to invest a little more than you might initially budget to get a case that's going to last for years and help keep your camera lasting longer, too.
