Multi Format Awesome Combination
I contemplated purchasing this camera for over a year due to the negative comments I had observed on reviews and on the net about low light performance. I actually due to costs purchased this camera, and I am truly glad that I did! The low light is no worse than a FX7 I was looking at, and its much cheaper. The video quality due to the 720P is fantastically different from interlaced and I simply love it. The controls are actually buttons and not annoying menu options, so you really can change on the fly. It has enough controls for an intermediate like myself to keep learning for quite a while! Once again, I cannot stress, the lowlight will actually shock you how well it works compared to those naysayers that said it was and is very bad. I think the lux requirement scares a lot of people, but you have to look at the complete package, read the manual(AGC can and should be turned off), and make a decision from someone that has had the camera for a little while(I recommend the reviews here and joining a forum), and you will find that people do love these cameras and it is most cool that the price has dropped on them this much for what you get...And once again, the low light isn't bad. Its just for pretty much pitch black of course your going to get a little noise. That is to be expected and is not a downfall of the camera. Also, the dvd that came with the camera actually gave some pretty good tips for people that have not purchased a HD camera before and also gave some insight on this cam versus the HD10, so I found it useful. Its also not a palmcam and has some substance to it which for a prosumer or second cam with upgraded features is a big plus in my book. Also the buttons for the most part are large enough for big hands like mine, so it is good there also.
Problems Encountered: The cons: Yes, its an older camera, blah, blah. But it still works well! The shutter speed and aperture are linked and not independent, but I have only had my cam two days and have learned to work around that already. But it is a small downfall of the camera. The zoom ring I haven't figured out how to make it move smoothly yet. Because its not as easy as the rest of the controls on the camera, I have to include it as a negative. The rest are really if you read the manual prior to purchase sort of intuitive. Also, and this is a big one, not from the cam. Varizooms do not work with this camera via the editing cable. I tried to figure it out as I already have a Varizoom and called B&H. The gentleman I spoke with actually went down to the showroom as he stated and tried to connect one and just like I experienced, the Varizoom did not work. So just keep this in mind(but its still a great cam for the cost, so it doesn't even matter to me to be honest)
Previous Equivalent Items Owned: None equivalent. Previous camera was Sony TRV19
Items I Recommend: A few ND filters(.3,.6 and .9) and a polarizer
