I was reluctant to buy the SteddiePod at the beginning.
It has been almost a year in searching and trying different stabilizers and rigs or tripods with wheels and etc. Now all of them somewhat have limitation for my use... specially how long I have to take to set them up!!
The Glidecam hd2000 with arm vest is the best thing out there IMO if you can set up fast enough. But I felt like I am a robocop and drawn too much attention to myself rather than the guests looking at the bride and groom. Merlin with vest is the same thing. But I think Glidecam has slight edge over Merlin.
Without the vest though.. Glidecam is SOOO heavy! I can't do it more than 2 mins in one go.
Merlin is a little lighter and I could handle it a little longer.
All the shoulder rigs are great I could hold it for the whole hour but they are no stabilizers... so the footage is not so smooth.
Now let talk about the Steddie Pod, I was able to make it stable within 5mins on my first attempt. That is impressive! (I do weddings and I couldn't afford to have set up time more than 30mins. As I normally have to go to both bride's and groom's house before I arrived at the wedding ceremony place.)
I CAN SWAP HANDS while videoing!!! WHAT?! that's right this is the ONLY stabilizer I know that can do that!
Best of all, I can use it as a monopod, though I cannot MF focus my lens due to that it will shake the camera, but it is great to NOT put your stabilizers on the floor and ruin the setting! Btw, I am now using AF lens on the camera so that I don't have to MF.
When extended to the max, it getting pretty tall. I have some shots where there are balloons on the ceiling and all my photogs cannot take the pics of the balloons because they were too high up... but I can! :D
I have watched Eddie do the promo before, I thought it's great that he could run with it and still got pretty stable shots.
Now, even though all stabilizers will help you in certain extend... they will not help you if you don't know how to use them properly. So make sure that you have lots of practice with this thing. Eddie is a pro, so he can do it pretty well as he KNOWS how to walk, run with it and he certainly knows how to control it well and know it limitations.
The down side though... The fluid head is not smooth and it is made of plastic.....:( I tried to change the head but I've found that it is stuck together to the stand/stick... meaning if I happen to brake the head then I will need to buy the whole thing again(??).
But overall, I must say that I shouldn't waste my time and money to buy all the other stabilizers as they are now have been left in the house when I go to do any event shooting. And of course I am now don't need to carry one more tripod for my camera too.
So bottom line, if you can spend time to calibrate your stabilizers and want the smoothest clips out of it then get Glidecam hd. But if you cannot spend time to calibrate then SteddiePod is a no brainier.
